 Vipava & Hubelj

My two home town rivers, which one I know the best. Both have parts where beginners are more welcome and parts where experienced people will do better.

Due to its length, Hubelj is more suitable for half-day fishing. While you can explore the Vipava for days. Both rivers have lush vegetation and diverse animals around them.
Both are known for large marble trouts.

Sava and tributaries

Sava is the largest tributary of the Danube and the longest Slovenian river. In Slovenia, the length of its course is 221 km, and from its source in Zelenci to the mouth of the Danube in Belgrade, it is over 900 km.

It is part of several fishing families and has many tributaries that are interesting for fishing. Among them are also Tržiška and Kamniška Bistrica, which I am listing separately. For fishing, it's most interesting in the upper part, which is run by the fishing family of Radovljica and Jesenice. The next one also offers bellyboat fishing for trout.

Kamniška Bistrica

Kamniška Bistrica is a salmonid area that begins below the spring - the reserve in Kamniška Bistrica. It is a small river that flows in blue through the canyons and gradually flows towards Kamnik. The upper part (witch is the best for fishing) of Bistrica is mainly inhabited by native, genetically pure brown trout. In the lower part they are joined by Danube salmon and chub. Due to the alpine environment, it is necessary to carefully approach the water with the fly rod, and after taking the photo, the fish must be returned to its aquatic environment. Due to its demanding approach and demanding throws, it is recommended for more experienced players.

Sava Bohinjka

Prime river in Slovenia. You can watch her beauty for hours and you don't even need to flyfish. It is mostly inhabited by brown trout rainbow trout and grayling. It is easily accessible and therefore suitable even for the inexperienced. But when you have a five-kilogram rainbowtrout on a fly rod, it's good to have a little experience. It starts from Lake Bohinj, flows over countless rapids, pools and waterfalls until it joins with the Sava Dolinka.

Tržiška Bistrica

Half an hour away from Ljubljana there is a wonderful little river called Tržiška Bistrica. It is especially beautiful in the upper part, where native trout live. It is decorated with small deep pools and extremely clean water. Lower down, it is joined by the Mošenik stream, which still hides some trophies in its short fishing zone.

Kokra

It is a river that originates from the caravans and most of the time moves through a narrow deep valley until it flows into the Sava river near Kranj. It has two parts, lower and upper. The lower one is known for larger trout and larger pools, while the upper part is home to smaller indigenous fighting trout. It is known mainly for large brown trout, especially in the lower part.

Due to its accessibility in the lower part, every angler will enjoy it, both beginners and experienced anglers. In the upper part, the more experienced will come to their advantage.

Poljanska Sora

It has a source in the Škofjeloški hills. I was a member of a fishing family on this river in the upper reaches so I know this river very well. It is a very beautiful part of the river Sora, where the river is divided into two parts. The upper part is dominated by nice brown trout and grayling. This section is not stocked with rainbow trout because of the high dam. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced fishermen.

Rižana

This river is definitely more suitable for experienced fly fishermen’s. Fishing is more challenging due to the lots of vegetation around the banks and timid fish. It is a fourteen kilometer long river in Slovenian Istria and is fishable from its source to the outlet to the sea. It is especially interesting in the upper part, where it is inhabited by beautiful brown trout, which are not easy to catch.

Krka

Krka is the longest right tributary of the Sava in Slovenia. It originates in Suha Krajina. It is a true karst river, especially in the upper and middle reaches, as it receives almost all of its water from karst springs. Especially is interesting fishing in the upper part in the month of May, when mayflies swarm along the river. It is known for the fact that it is inhabited by a large number of trout, among which some big ones are hiding.
Access to the river is easy, so it is also suitable for beginners.

A beautiful set of small rivers in the heart of the Polhograj dolomites. The gradaščica river is mainly inhabited by grayling and with a good population of the water king hucho. In the river you will find smaller specimens of huchos and here and there some larger ones. The group of rivers also includes Božna and Mala voda, which serve beautiful brown trout. Especially Božna with its small pools will impress you.
