Start of the 2026 fly fishing season on the Vipava River

Like every start of the season on the Vipava River, this one was also something special. It was a beautiful sunny day with a temperature of 22 degrees. I usually go fly fishing at the start of the season alone, but this season I started fishing with my good friend. We started early in the fly fishing area around the Napoleon Bridge, where we both caught a rainbow trout. We then moved about 500m upstream where the water flows into a large pool, and above the pool there is deep, calm water. My friend tried his luck in the pool, while I made my way through the thorns to the river bank where the environment was created under the roots, perfect for marble trout. I cast the streamer and let it sink really deep under the roots. And indeed, a marble trout came attacking from under the roots and swallowed the big olive streamer. The fight with the fish didn’t last long, about 40 seconds, until my friend came over the bushes and helped me put it in the net.

After a quick photo shoot, she was released back where she belongs. She measured about 50cm. Later I caught two more hybrids on a dry fly. One of the best fly fishing days on Vipava.
