For the last two days I hosted two srch and resaue pilots from Norway. Oli and Mathias came to Slovenia with the intention of fishing on beautiful Slovenian rivers and with the desire to catch marble trout. However, using only dry flies. But really nothing else.
At first, I thought the idea was a bit crazy because success also depends on the weather, especially when using dry flies. We spent the first day on the Soča River, where Mathias caught three rainbow trouts, including a 3-kilogram one. Oli left the Soča River only with the memory of a large grayling that unfortunately fell off. After the day was over, I suggested that we go to my home river the next day. There was also the Idrijca on the suggestion , which is also a very beautiful river. The next day we were on the Vipava River. We started fishing at around 10 am and after 2 hours we only noticed 2 fish.
Mathias and Oli began to have doubts. Is this really the river we came from Norway for? Will we get marble trout? By noon we were almost done and we were changing locations. I told myself it couldn’t be that bad, I have too much respect for this river to give up. I told them they would have to continue and trust me. They agreed. I took them to a location where I knew the best chance of getting marble trout was there. And indeed we spotted a 50 plus centimeter trout, picking on the surface.
After 1 and a half hours of fly fishing for this fish, it finally took the fly and 10 minutes later was in the net. Surprise, it was a brown trout. Oli was finally satisfied. They decided to take a short break for lunch. Meanwhile, clouds began to gather over the landscape and it smelled like a storm. And that only means one thing here, the river will run wild . Towards evening, it was picking on the surface around almost every bush hanging over the river. The result was that they both got their own marble trout and this very healthy wild marble trout. In the end, the weather literally chased us out of the river so we almost ran to the car. This day will remain in my memory for a long time.
It’s days like these that make me love this job.
